GOD BE WITH YOU, YOU POOR SUFFERER!
Director - Alvis Hermanis
Comedy plus very strange poetry – that's how one could try to define the genre in which the now Oscar-winning British-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh writes plays.
This detective story (the original title of the play is Hangmen) is based on true facts and documentary characters from the distant year of 1965, when the death penalty (by hanging) was officially abolished in England and the last of His Majesty's executioners were suddenly out of a job.
This is a crime story where, unlike Sherlock Holmes’ and Agatha Christie’s detective stories, it is up to the spectator himself to figure out at the end who is really guilty.
Director Alvis Hermanis adds: "We chose this play because in our dear Latvia it has recently become very topical to keep an eye on everybody, to monitor everybody and, of course, to punish everybody immediately. Preferably in such a way that they are done and there be peace and quiet afterwards."
