BLACK SWAN
Director - Alvis Hermanis
With this performance we will open the New Stage – a unique stage that the old Lāčplēša Street Theatre did not have at all. This is a completely new playing field, offering unprecedented technical possibilities.
"The Black Swan” theory is a scientific metaphor for an event that comes completely unexpected, unpredictable and completely changes the existing situation. The term is used in economics, military vocabulary and politics. Historically, the term originated from the assumption that black swans do not exist in nature. Until suddenly, one fine day, a member of the species was discovered in Australia.
In the case of our performance, the metaphor of the "black swan" is a reference to Russian classical ballet, to the current political context and to some of the characters in Dostoyevsky's novel "The Idiot" (which is the basis for the staging of the performance).
This paraphrase of Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ risen from the dead, written so long ago, in today's context makes us look more carefully and reread the novel more carefully - what exactly is the author trying to tell us? And have we misunderstood something or lingered too long in our illusions?
