A Sect of Dream Interpreters
Director - Alvis Hermanis
The play is based on the novel "Dictionary of the Khazars" by Milorad Pavič.
For the seven years we were away, we had been thinking and trying to figure out what show should be the one to open the new New Riga Theatre? It was a real challenge, because we wanted to find an idea and material that would meet too many criteria. So that all actors
would have roles there. So that the show would be about our – the New Riga Theatre – company and its history.
So that it would be a play about the nature of actor and theatre. So that it would be a play about the hectic times we live in. So that it would also be a metaphor for the destiny of Latvia and its probable future. So that the play would be a journey through time and space, around the world and through all times. So that all the horizontals and verticals of human life would intersect in it. So that it would be poetic and its text – of the highest literary perfection. The task of finding such material may seem impossible. But we did succeed.
Milorad Pavić's novel "Dictionary of the Khazars" provided the inspiration for this inaugural performance of the New Riga Theatre. It is the story of an ancient and fabled people, the Khazars, who really lived 1000 years ago, in the same area (between the Caspian and Black Seas) where
the fate of the world, and that of ours, is now being decided in Ukraine.
And finally. It was important to have in this show something that we at the New Riga Theatre like to do best. To do something that we have never done before.
